Luckily, there are a lot of ways to help — countless organizations are working together to help these victims, both by actively saving lives, as well as working towards recovery. Two that I can personally recommend are Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross. Both have an outstanding track record of doing phenomenal work.

In the near-term, Doctors Without Borders is exceedingly important — funds donated to them enable them to send both supplies and personnel with the appropriate expertise to support the damaged and overrun Japanese healthcare network.

Meanwhile, donating to the Red Cross will enable them to help more people, longer, in their road to recovery. As someone who lost most of his worldly possessions to a natural disaster (albeit one orders of magnitude smaller than this), I can personally attest to the importance of long-term recovery efforts. I’ve personally witnessed the effect the Red Cross and similar organizations can have on peoples’ lives, and their continued dedication to seeing people regain some semblance of normalcy. They have the means and expertise to help these people over the multi-year recovery process, and I can’t put to words how important that is.
